ESSAY 3 ASSIGNMENT:

length: 10-15 pages
due: Tuesday, 12/17 by 5:00 p.m.

For the final paper, you're free to choose any topic of your interest with a plausible connection to Roman decadence. You must make substantial use of Roman primary sources and use at least two secondary sources as well. The resulting paper should be an academic essay (rather than, say, a short story), and the connection to the course topic should be clear or should be articulated within the paper. Otherwise, the topic and approach are wide open. As with the other essays, you should you the Chicago style of documentation. Return to the assignments page for information on grading and resource links for Chicago style.

In order to provide some feedback along the way and to make sure you get started before the reading period, I'm building two intermediate steps into the assignment:

11/21-11/26: Individual topic conferences.

I'll schedule half-hour appointments with each of during the period just before the Thanksgiving break. At least 24 hours before you come to your appointment, you must e-mail your topic ideas to me. In the conference we can work on focussing the topic if necessary and talk over some possible bibliography.

12/9: In class discussion of papers.

On the last day of class, each of you will have an opportunity to talk for 5 minutes or so about your paper. By this point you should already have done some substantive work on researching and organizing your paper, if not on actually writing it. Plan to present your work as coherently and articulately as you can at its present stage. If you have places in your argument that are still rough or that need more support, feel free to ask the class for help. Also be prepared to accept from your classmates challenges to or refinements of your argument.
